Rhetoric is how you talk every day. Whether it be face to face communication, talking to someone on the phone or over text, or even posting something to social media. Whenever we write something, we are influenced in some way. It can be something personal, such as how we feel about certain topics, or it can be random, such as something small that happened to us earlier in the day or the week. When we write, we try to persuade our audience in some way. Because we are trying to persuade the audience, we sometimes have to put how we really feel to the side and try to gain the respect of the reader. We want the reader to agree with us or look at what we are trying to promote. We want to be able to grab their attention. This is something that is not easy to do and it can take a lot of practice. Once you get good at it, it is a very good skill to have in your back pocket. I have come to understand rhetoric in this way through a few articles that I read online and though prior English classes.
I think it’s super interesting how you said that sometimes the true feelings of the writer or speaker have to be concealed in order to win over the audience. I think that statement is true because the main goal of rhetoric is to persuade, and there are definitely people that have preached against what they truly believed in. I also agree that rhetoric can be something as small as a social media post/daily occurrences because people often forget that rhetoric is more than powerful speeches or documents.
